Hi Grizzly, Artec 1236 USB Scanner is not compatible with Windows 8. This is the reason why Windows 8 is unable to recognize the scanner device when you connect it to the computer. The Artec website shows that this scanner is compatible only with Windows 98/ME/2000/XP. You may check the details from this link: Since the scanner is compatible with Windows XP, we do have an option to install its drivers on Windows 8 in Windows XP Compatibility Mode.
To do this you may first download and save the driver (Version 2.92) for the scanner model from the above given link.
