My geek friends tell me that I am going to have to come in to the 20th or 21st century one of these days. For many years I have used a DOS cadd program called Generic Cadd 6 by Autodesk. (It is old enough that Autodesk says they never made such a program), I don't do a lot in cadd, just a shop drawing or floor plan from time to time. I have purchased Autodesk QuickCad 8, hoping it would work like my old program, but it does not. When I learned Generic Cadd, my Ex-son in law gave me a book that started out 'position mouse on screen.
Move mouse to new location.' I have not been able to get going in QuickCad.
Does anyone know of a teaching program or book that will get me started? Thanks - JHF. Yes it does, and it is as much 3d as true Autocad is (which is not really saying much now is it?). And it will open and save files in every acad format all the way back to R12. Dassault owns the rights to the ACIS geometry Kernal which ACAD uses, so every seat Autodesk sells, Dassault gets a cut anyway. Autodesk was making noises about buying Spatial Technologies after using their kernal for several years but Dassault bought them out from under them, giving Autodesk the middle finger in the process. Yep, there was no clear reason for Dassault (owner of SolidWorks) to buy Spatial other than to give Autodesk the big hairy finger since they used their own proprietary kernal (and still do).
Then they turned around and released DWG editor a few years back that was their first iteration at a ACAD clone, then they re-released it as DraftSight and made it open source. It was farking brilliant marketing move because now users of Solidworks have no reason to even own a seat of autocad because they can do everything using a Dassault Systems owned program. And nobody else does either because they released the program for free to the world. That is why Autodesk is really trying so hard to shove Inventor down all of their client's throats and making it such that once you open an acad file in the newest version you can't save it as an earlier version anymore, they have to figure out how to expand beyond Autocad or die. I have learned most of what I know (or don't know) about compters by plunking around on them. The help seems to be menu driven, where you have to know what to ask more than a tutorial. I keep telling myself I am going to take an hour a day just to plunk around in it and hope I can make some headway that way.
And, I plan to google QuickCAD 8 tutorial and see what I get. I'll have to do all that at home. Summer time in the refrigeration business is not the time for such things in the office! Autodesk has responded by purchasing software's that were built or tailored to be Soildworks add-ons like Mould Flow or Navisworks.

I have been able to keep a computer running that has enough of a DOS shell to work, but I can't print anymore, so I have to export to some other format then print in another program.
Now my old computer is having problems and the company does not want me to put that old DOS program on my newer computer. I run it at home on a Windows 7 machine under a program called DOS BOX and it works reasonably well, except for the print issues and the screen aspect ratio is off a little, so a square look like a rectangle and a circle an elipse.
